Sora Lodge is a luxurious retreat, offering fabulous views of the surrounding hills, a serene ambience, modern accommodations, world-class service, delicious food and an authentic African experience.
Located in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia, Lalibela is a famous tourist destination in Ethiopia located 2,500 meters above sea level and is known for its distinctive rock-cut churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries –which are pilgrimage sites for Coptic Christians. Carved out of rock, the subterranean monoliths include huge Bete Medhane Alem, and cross-shaped Bete Giyorgis. Many are joined by tunnels and trenches, and some have carved bas-reliefs and colored frescoes inside.
What makes Sora Lodge unique are its location and the breathtaking views. All rooms have two large verandas facing towards east and west from where our guests can see Lalibela’s biggest mountain, “Asheten Mariam”, and watch the sunrise as well as the sunset.
The hilltop property has a beautiful garden with shady trees where guests can enjoy the tranquility and fresh air and watch eagles sailing over the valley.

The Tukul Family chalets accommodates three adults and come with a kingsize bed and a separate single bed. With an ensuite open shower area, the Tukul chalets are constructed using local rocks and provide panoramic views of the valley. The chalet has wooden flooring and all modern amenities one can think of. Cultural decorative items, handcrafted decor and African weavings adorn areas of wood paneling and natural stone to provide an ambience of calmness and harmony.
The Rock Hewn rooms are also available for those looking for a cosy and comfortable accommodation in Lalibela and provide magnificent mountain views from the attached balcony. With typically African furnishings, the Rock Hewn rooms are furnished uniquely and offer all modern amenities. The interiors are done in soft tones and the open-plan chalet had a well appointed sitting area with an attached bathroom equipped with rain shower, double vanity, and stand-alone wash basin – all done in rustic African styling.
However, the highlight at Sora Lodge are the ornately designed treehouses built with wood that offer a uniquely African experience of staying in natural surroundings while enjoying all the modern facilities on offer. Guests have the option to dine in the privacy of their suite or chalet, or at Aron’s Garden Restaurant, the lodge’s only restaurant and cocktail bar. The restaurant is located conveniently in the far corner of the lodge where chefs prepare delicious and healthy cuisine made with fresh organic ingredients. The restaurant cum bar is perched on the edge of the hill and offers stunning views of the valley below. Here you can even learn how to bake “injera” (the traditional pan cake that accompanies every Ethiopian meal) and the Ethiopian “shiro” (a spicy vegetarian sauce): Experienced chefs at the restaurant also offer cooking classes for anybody who is interested in learning more about Ethiopian cuisine.
